An Incubatee, Intellectual Property and Intellectual Property Rights

On our next lecture series, we have tackled 2 different topics. First is an Overview of Intellectual Property and Intellectual Property Rights which is the lecture speaker is an OIC Director of IPTBM and faculty member of Office Administration in CBM, Dr. Gumaliela A. Dumancas. Dr. Dumancas talks about the legal basis of Intellectual Property and Intellectual Property Rights that governed Intellectual Property Code (R.A. 8293) and governed by Republic Act 10055 (Phil. Techno Transfer Act 2009), Dr. Dumancas said that Intellectual Property is a creations of the mind. She also mentioned about the protection of intellectual property, important of intellectual property in value, monetize, transfer, exclude others, regulate, and take ownership. By registering of protecting the intellectual property, it can prevent competitors from copying the trademark, technology or product. Intellectual Property starts in creation, protection, utilize for commercialization, and enforcement of the protection you are filing. She also share with us the types and function of trademark/service mark, the terms of protection for trademarks is protected for 10 (years) from the date of filling and renewable every 10 (ten) years and perpetual to use the particular trademark, you have to submit the Declaration of Actual Use because it is required in renewal process. She also discussed the different terms of protection for invention, utility model, industrial design, layout, and copyright. She then explain the importance of Patent Search and gave us tips in doing patent search.
So our next lecture series speaker is coming from CMU Technology Business Incubator, a manager of CMU TBI, Ms. Rhea Mae Conada. She first introduced us on how does TBI function in CMU, when did it started and why does it has incubator? As we all know, Central Mindanao University is one of the leading university in agriculture, forestry, and other related fields. Its function on research brought innovation and technologies that IPTBM has. This technologies need to commercialize in able to gain income and improve itself. TBI offered a services like product commercialization, enterprise development, access to networks, and knowledge transfer. Why Musuan Peak Incubator? Because Musuan Peak is the landmark of CMU, incubator is the one who will nurture, and peak is the TBI services offered which is the one I mentioned above. Incubatee is a natural person, unregistered association, or a juridical entity who has the desire to undergo the incubation program. Ms. Rhea explain to us the target incubatees and it has two classifications; one would-be entrepreneurs and second would be the startups or existing. She also mention on how to become an incubatee and if you have a desire or willingness to build a business then enroll in TBI - called pre-incubatee, in order to become one, she gave us the registration procedure which is fill out the application form, attend a one day training seminar, assessment, and the qualified pre-incubatess will then procreed to the incubation process. And if ever you'll enroll as incubatee, there will be another registration procedure. She also share with us the phases of incubation, curriculum, and exit criteria.
After listening to these lecture series 3 and 4, I have learned that building a business or startups will really undergo trainings, have basic knowledge and important aspects. With these lectures, I, myself becoming more interested in business especially that having one is my ultimate dream and goal in life. I have learned so many things with these lecture series, as a student and a future marketer or even business tycoon soon, I should be wise, smart, and responsible one to bring out the best in me in the long run.
